Schedule for July 4th Celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Founding of St. Mary Parish, Salem

Monday, June 28th – Visit of the National Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima to St. Mary Church in Salem:
The National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of the USA is a lovely hand-carved Image of Our Lady of Fatima given to our country by the Bishop of Fatima in 1967 and crowned by Cardinal O’Boyle in the National Basilica in Washington, DC in 1971. The Statue was blessed by Pope Paul VI during his visit to Fatima in 1967.
The statue will be received in Salem before the 8:15am Mass on Monday, June 28th, and remain in the church throughout the day for veneration and prayer. At 12 Noon, the Rosary of Our Lady will be prayed, with a short talk by Mr. Bill Sockey. At 5:30pm, a Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be celebrated, followed by Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. At 7:00pm, a talk on Our Lady of Fatima will be given by Mr. Bill Sockey, who travels the United States with the National Pilgrim Virgin of Fatima Statue. Light refreshments will be served in the lobby of the school follwoing this evening talk.

St. Mary’s Cemetery: New Altar Mensa
Wednesday, November 12th, 2008On September 24, 2008, Rausch Bros. Monument Company delivered the new altar mensa (top) for our cemetery altar. Two holy relics were placed under the mensa in the cement, and the simple prayers of blessing were said.
The Rausch Monument Company carved the five crosses on the top of the mensa, and were very gracious during the project. May God reward their generosity to our parish, as well as the donors.
The next time Bishop Swain visits the parish (in favorable weather!), he will be asked to dedicate the altar according to the simple ceremony.

Saint Michael the Archangel
Friday, July 18th, 2008An anonymous donor, after securing the permission of the Pastor, commissioned this magnificent wood-carving of Saint Michael the Archangel in honor of St. Mary’s upcoming quasquicentennial celebration in 2010, and in Thanksgiving for the Pontificate of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. Carved in South America, the statue arrived at the Omaha airport a few weeks ago, and was brought to Salem on Wednesday, July 16.
At the end of September, when we celebrate the Feast of St. Michael, the statue will be blessed and placed in church.

SAINT Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
This prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII after he experienced a horrifying vision. On October 13, 1884, while consulting with his cardinals after Mass, Pope Leo XIII paused at the foot of the altar and lapsed into what looked like a coma. After a little while the Pope recovered himself and related the terrifying vision he had of the battle between the Church and Satan. Afterwards, Pope Leo went to his office and composed this now famous prayer to St. Michael the Archangel and assigned it to be recited after Low Mass, a position it occupied until Vatican II. It was recently recommended by Pope John Paul II in a speech to a crowd of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday April 24, 1994 as a prayer for the Church.
