New Shrine for the Infant Jesus of Prague

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Mr. Paul Streff of Clark, SD, Salem native and son of parishioner Mrs. Frances Streff, completed the new shrine for the statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague this past week, and delivered it to Salem.  The shrine, which matches the pedestal he made for the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the opposite (west) side of the church, is breathtakingly beautiful.  Paul worked on the shrine for the Infant Jesus in his spare time over the last three years.  It certainly was worth the wait.  This shrine, as well as the pedestal for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, were given to St. Mary’s by Frances as memorials.  The statue of the Infant Jesus was given to St. Mary Church in 1957 by the late Mr. and Mrs. Lanners.

“Indeed, the cure for death does exist. Christ is the tree of life, once more within our reach. If we remain close to him, then we have life. Hence, during this night of resurrection, with all our hearts we shall sing the alleluia, the song of joy that has no need of words. Hence, Paul can say to the Philippians: “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice!” (Phil 4:4). Joy cannot be commanded. It can only be given. The risen Lord gives us joy: true life. We are already held for ever in the love of the One to whom all power in heaven and on earth has been given (cf. Mt 28:18). In this way, confident of being heard, we make our own the Church’s Prayer over the Gifts from the liturgy of this night: Accept the prayers and offerings of your people. With your help may this Easter mystery of our redemption bring to perfection the saving work you have begun in us.  Amen.”

The Salem Sanctuary: Lent 2010

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Please notice the silver candlesticks and Altar Cross, and the unbleached beeswax candles.  All of our candles are mady by the Lux Candle Company of Ipswich, South Dakota: http://www.luxcandlecompany.com/

After over two years of catechesis and gradual implementation, our parish now celebrates the Liturgy of the Eucharist ad orientem - in solidarity with the liturgical reforms promoted by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.   The 1970’s ”People’s Altar” (made from parts of the original Communion Rail) is in safe storage, and a much smaller altar for Masses “versus populum” has been made (to accomodate elderly priests who cannot make the three steps to the altar, etc.).

More Confirmation photographs

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Today, I received a disc of Confirmation photos taken by St. Mary’s official parish photographer, Sherry Stoffel.

I have not included the individual photos taken with the bishop following Confirmation in this post.   However, they are available, if the Confirmandi would like copies.

Thank you, Sherry, for always doing a superb job and for doing it with such cheer.

October 3: Confirmation at Salem

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

On Saturday evening at 6:00 pm, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Paul Joseph Swain, 8th Bishop of Sioux Falls, came to Salem for Pontifical Mass (in the Ordinary Form) and the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to 18 of our young parishioners:

October 1: Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

In the years following her canonization in 1925, a statue of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was venerated on the epistle side of the church sanctuary, to the left of the side altar dedicated to St. Aloysius Gonzaga.  In the 1960’s, following the Council, this statue was removed, its whereabouts rumored to be the cistern now covered over by the  school yard/parking lot.

The Priest of Salem asked the Carmelite Nuns in Alexandria to pray that he could find a suitable statue of St. Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus.  After a few months, their prayers were answered, and a beautiful 61″ (circa 1935) statue of the young Doctor of the Church, in need of a new home, was located and donated.  On October 1st, following the Holy Mass and before Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (First Thursday Adoration for the Year of the Priesthood), the statue was blessed.

Tonight I was given this postcard by a parishioner.  It is in great shape, having made it through the postal system way back then…and only cost a 1 cent stamp!
